I want to eat healthy, I want to meal prep a weeks worth of healthy breakfasts and lunches so I don't skip breakfast and I don't get myself fast food at lunch time, HOWEVER I don't want to spend my Sunday afternoon in the kitchen for hours, to only have to then still cook the family dinner Sunday night, IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!
A Local Gym here in New Braunfels has a great meal Prep Service that I have tried out here for the last couple weeks and I wanted to give an honest review on all the meals and snacks I tried out.
First Breakfast -Sausage Scramble
So first things first....I hate sweet potatoes and this breakfast is full of them! I had a few of them and they were ok but halfway thru I went ahead and separated out the rest of the Sweet Potatoes out of the scramble. Egg to Sausage Ratio was amazing, adding in the broccoli was a great way to get your greens in with an unconventional but delicious way. Now I feel it could have used a sprinkle of cheese to kind of bind the scramble together but that would affect the calorie and fat counts- Adding 2 Tbsp of your favorite salsa or hot sauce would be a great addition without affecting the healthy aspect of the meal.
I would most likely order this again- without the sweet potatoes lol
First Snack- Pumpkin Loaf
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS, Like next time this is on the menu I'm gonna order 2- In full honesty the loaf was slightly under cooked and the center of the loaf was more of a pumpkin pie filling texture than a bread, but I think that helped the loaf stay moist and and creamy. This was a great snack that I actually think would be great as a breakfast item as well.
Absolutely will order again!
First Lunch- White Wine Chicken, Rice and Asparagus
The asparagus was the best Asparagus I have EVER HAD, the chicken was light and delicate very well cooked not dry and very flavorful. I do wonder how healthy the rice is as we have always heard how rice is carbs and you should limit carbs, so I've reached out to The Gym about getting macro info included on the labels to help customers monitor their input. I was only able to eat about half the chicken and rice ( I ate every bit of that asparagus ) but it worked out well because it was a Tuesday when I had this so that means it was Sonic Cheeseburger night at home with the Wilson's so having the other half of this with a side salad for dinner was perfect without ruining all the healthy eating I am trying to maintain.
I would absolutely order this meal again
Second Breakfast- 2 Southwestern Egg Muffins
Eggs, Bell Peppers and Spinach was a delightful combination again I would add your fav salsa or hot sauce but other than that it was great and honestly I couldn't even finish both of them one filled me right up. I'm not a huge breakfast person so having these already prepared and stored in my work fridge was a huge help and I'm sure much better than my survive off iced coffee until noon routine I usually have. I did repeat this meal for Breakfast 3 as well.
I would most likely order these again.
Second Snack- Tropical Almond Butter Balls
These sweet little snacks rolled with bits of cranberries and pineapple and topped with coconut were a delightful sweet treat, a lot of protein balls can be kind of dry but these were great, texture and and quality of ingredients and the flavor were amazing.
I would definitely order these again
Second Lunch- Roasted Pork Loin,Potatoes carrots and corn
Veggies and potatoes roasted to perfection, pork portion size was good, meat was very tender - Having potatoes throws me off as everything we’ve ever been told is how potatoes are carbs and are bad for you, but truthfully in moderation they are fine for you.
This is the one meal I would prolly omit from my order, flavor profile was a bit underwhelming for me and very much so felt like the bro diet without being the bro diet (chicken, brown rice, broccoli) but it was one of those meals that are great for a super filling and easy on your stomach, maybe paired with the Asparagus from Day 1 lunch would give this dish the added oomph it needs.
Third Breakfast- Southwest Egg Muffins
I did remember to bring some Frank's Red Hot Sauce and man was it good . Eggs make me nervous in general since I don't usually mix well with eggs but even with these meal prepped eggs they tasted just as fresh as if they had been cracked that morning.
Third Lunch- Chicken Burrito Bowl
Marinated chicken, Spanish rice and pinto beans- this dish looks beautiful and smells even better. The bell peppers were cooked to perfection but I could have definitely had more in the dish but I truly love green bell peppers I could eat a Green Bell Pepper like an apple that's how much I like them- The beans were a bit dry but I may have reheated them to long them just slightly. This was great simple but full flavored meal, it was filling and well prepared the chicken was really great.
I would order this meal again.
Additional Meals and Snacks I tried-
Breakfast Sausage Scramble- perfect ratio of sausage and egg with red, orange and green bell peppers This was hands down my favorite Breakfast
Lunch- Fiesta Pasta Chicken - This was made with a veggie based pasta so the carb content is way lower than your traditional pasta dish, this was bar far my favorite meal and I would really like it on the menu again next week *Hint Hint*
PB S’mores Protein Balls- Holy Moly do these cure a sweet tooth craving like no other, equal parts smooth and crunchy, sweet with a hint of salt it is the perfect snack for that 2:30pm lull
I would have to say For breakfasts my favorite would actually be one of the snacks- The Pumpkin Loaf or Pumpkin Muffin with a cup of a coffee is such a wonderful start to my day I love the combo of pumpkin and Coffee together. A Close 2nd would be the Southwest Scramble with the Broccoli, the combo of scrambled eggs with perfectly cooked broccoli was so good!
Snacks I loved them all so much I don’t think I can pick a favorite,I would prolly order double next time so I can share with Mr.Wilson
Lunches- My favorite hands down is the Fiesta Pasta Chicken this dish was so filling and delicious that I have already asked the gym to do this dish in a family size option so I can share with the family, Even LT the self proclaimed Pickiest Foodie himself would eat this dish by the bowl full.
I think my favorite sides for the lunches would be the Corn and the Asparagus- The corn was perfectly cooked and the kernels were large kernels that had a ton of Flavor. Asparagus is not a side I fix at home no matter how many times I try it either comes out too crunchy or too mushy I have no in between...and Mr.Wilson refuses to eat it so I don’t actually try to improve my skills on it that much. The asparagus from The Gym is so flavorful and wonderfully cooked I would prolly request in every meal that I could.
Overall This is such a great service to have and one of the amazing benefits to being a member of The Gym.
