Thanksgiving at my Grandparents house always seemed like a large event (then I met my husbands family and I realized how small my family really was) but Grandma and Mom and My Aunts were all in the kitchen hustling around getting things ready, Grandpa and My Dad watching football in the living room, and the cousins running around and being told to stay out of the kitchen, and my Uncle coming in the door just as all the food was done.
The food was always great but its the after the meal those were the memories that have stuck with me, the games of gin rummy that would go on for hours, watching Grandpa walk into the kitchen for his 3rd slice of pie and then me falling asleep in the car leaning over Tupperware full of leftovers. I've spent a lot of my adult life chasing these recipes and tweaking the family classic. Ultimately I think a lot of what I've been chasing is that feeling of the holidays, The traditions of the classic recipes and sometimes you just can't beat a classic.
You’ve watched your parents and grandparents and the other adults in your life make and serve Green Bean Casserole every holiday since you were 4 but…How is it done? Is that creamy goodness really as simple as everyone says?
Yes, the base of it really is just that simple, now you can certainly put a hipster spin on this , add bacon or swap out the green beans for broccoli or Brussels sprouts for a fresh new take but sometimes you just want that plain Jane ol' recipe your grandma made every thanksgiving and Christmas with no variations or substitutions .
The great thing about casseroles is you can use canned ingredients and it doesn’t throw off the taste and is incredibly inexpensive and easy to make. Using Wal-Mart brands all the ingredients will cost you less than $10 and feed 8 people
So if you’re looking to contribute to the Family Potlucks this year without breaking the bank or breaking a sweat offer to bring Green Bean Casserole your mom and Grandma will be so impressed you might even earn yourself a seat at the grown up table.
Remember to Wash your hands, Wear a Mask and Make Good Choices!! Enjoy!
